Ironing polyester and using iron in hem tape?

I have a pair of polyester swim trunks (they are of course very thin material) I love the print on the trunks but I hate how long they are. I want to shorten them. Can I use the iron-in hem tape? Or will I melt/ruin the trunks....? am I forced to take them to a taylor to have them shortened?
