Wills, inheritance, and next of kin?

If someone dies without making a will, and they're my next of kin (as in under the rules of intestacy I would be the one to inherit), am I under any actual OBLIGATION to deal with their estate? I appreciate that I would be as an executor, but do I have to just as a next of kin? Can I just sit my and lead my life while their stuff rots?
