How did the toys in Toy Story become alive?

Have they always been alive? If so, were they alive when they were just unformed pieces of metal and plastic, or right after they came out of the mold? Or is it some kind of black magic? Does that mean there's sorcerers working undercover in toy factories? What do you think happened?
