What movie is this it doesnt have much detail?

if i remember it was about this kid in his teens and he got special powers and a master or something comes and teaches him but in another part he blasts his friend or someone with a fire bolt kind of thing. and no its not the sorcerers apprentice or dragon ball it was made in like 2006 through 2009 i cant remember i never watched it i just saw previews and didnt really care but now i want to watch it so please try to figure it out
