Why should we listen to voices of the past (religion) when the future holds more answers (science)?

When I read a religious book like the Bible or the Quran. I think it is ridiculous that people could believe such nonsense. But I don't blame the people of the past. They didn't know better. They really did believe in magic and all sorts of silly things. Kings even had to their counsel some of the best sorcerers in the land. These books give me a glimpse into the minds of the past. In a way it is fascinating. But depressing that we still have people with past mentalities still living among us.
